French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed concern over the situation of the French ambassador to Niger, who is currently living like a hostage in the French embassy. Macron accused the military rulers in Niger of blocking food deliveries to the embassy, stating that the ambassador is being forced to survive on military rations. The military leaders in Niger had previously demanded that the ambassador leave the country, but France refused to comply with their ultimatum.

Macron reiterated that he would coordinate with President Bazoum, the legitimate authority in Niger, regarding the situation. The coup in Niger has been condemned by France and neighboring countries, and the new military regime has terminated military cooperation agreements with France. The Sahel region has experienced a series of coups in recent years, leading to a breakdown of democratic governance in several countries.
