In the aftermath of the coup in Niger, there has been a surge of anti-Western sentiment, with some individuals proudly displaying Russian flags in support of the military takeover. Niger previously had a close alliance with the West in terms of security and economic cooperation.

France, in particular, had a significant presence in the country due to its military base and reliance on Niger’s uranium production. However, the coup has led to a shift in sentiment, with protests against the West and even attacks on the French embassy. This movement seems to be spreading throughout the country.

One businessman, who remains anonymous for safety reasons, expressed his pro-Russian stance and resentment towards France, stating that his country has been exploited for its resources. He mentioned that thousands participated in a recent protest to support the military takeover.

Niger, with a population of 24.4 million, faces significant poverty, with two in every five people living in extreme poverty.
