On Wednesday, the House Oversight and Judiciary committees announced that they have scheduled a closed-door, transcribed interview with James Biden, President Joe Biden’s brother, for February 21st.

The interview is a component of the House GOP’s impeachment inquiry into the president. Republicans are interested in James Biden’s business dealings and aim to determine if the president was involved in or exploited his influence to benefit from those activities. However, the committees have not yet presented any evidence to substantiate this claim.

James Biden’s interview is scheduled just a week before Hunter Biden’s. Both parties had a prolonged standoff regarding the timing and method of Hunter Biden’s testimony to Congress.

In November, Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., issued subpoenas as part of the GOP’s impeachment inquiry, including one for James Biden. The panel claimed that financial records obtained allegedly showed that 20 shell companies, most of which were set up while Joe Biden was vice president, were used by members of the Biden family to conceal payments from foreign adversaries.

The White House has firmly rejected accusations of wrongdoing by the president, emphasizing that Republicans have failed to provide any evidence to support their claims. Biden aides have argued that the GOP’s desire to impeach the president is motivated by political payback, seeking revenge for the two impeachments of former President Donald Trump.

In December, the House voted to formally authorize the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, a move that Republicans believed would strengthen their ability to enforce subpoenas in court.
